Iced Coffee At Home
Whilst everyone is making whipped coffee with milk, here I am happily trying out simple iced coffee recipes. This was my approach to the warm four-day weekend as the country remains in lockdown. Please note that I am not a professional barista nor a connoisseur. I am just your ordinary coffee consumer wanting to make iced coffee in the comfort of my home.
There are several ways to make your version of this cooling caffeine fix at home; depending on the type of brewing method you want and coffee beans you have. Feel free to experiment. Your home, your rules.
Using the Hario V60 brew method and following this guide, I made my coffee using the Flying Horse Coffee, single origin ground beans from Peru. To pour, I used a gooseneck kettle (Stagg EKG) which allowed me to exert much greater control ensuring I do not flood the coffee grinds.
My final brewing time was roughly 2 minutes longer than what the guide suggested. I am not sure if it was because of the grind size or my pouring technique, which is probably not the best in the world. However, the brew was sweet and caramelly in taste, which for me, is ideal for iced coffee.
The next step was pouring the brew into a glass with ice then adding milk (I like mine full fat), but you can also skip the milk and have it black whichever you prefer. I also did not add sugar or syrup but feel free to do so if that’s how you enjoy your cuppa.
Looking back, I probably wouldn’t add too much ice as this has the tendency to dilute the coffee when it melts resulting in a watered-down effect. This is where experimentation may come in handy, trying out ways to make the brew more concentrated to counteract the dilution. One method may be to play with the ratios (more grounds to the same amount of water) in order to create an iced coffee that still has a satisfying strength. Alternatively, I might try making this with cold brew instead of the traditional method. Keep in mind cold brew is a much longer process. This, on the other hand, was a quick fix but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
